Cycling Advocacy in the City of Ottawa
The Ottawa Centre EcoDistrict (OCED) received the Bruce Timmermans Cycling Award from the City of Ottawa for their contribution to the cycling community. The Award honours Bruce Timmermans, who was a cycling advocate and supporter in the Ottawa region. Bruce Timmermans was a member of the Ottawa Bicycle Club and a founding member of Citizens for Safe Cycling. The Bruce Timmermans Award was created by the City of Ottawa in 1999 and is annually presented to individuals and organizations who follow the footsteps of Bruce Timmermans in promoting and advocating cycling as a form of transportation.
The OCED received the 2015 Bruce Timmermans organizational Award from the City of Ottawa for their contributions to cycling advocacy in the city. The Bruce Timmermans award recognizing an individual was awarded to Paul Clarke, leader of Citizens for Safe Cycling in Ottawa for his contributions to the cycling community. Paul leads the Advocacy Working Group of Citizens for Safe Cycling, where he plays a coordinating role between cyclists, the NCC, the City, and the private sector. He has provided valuable insights to more than 30 city projects including street designs for O’Connor Street and Laurier Avenue.
The OCED was recognized for its initiatives that promote the benefits of cycling as a form of transportation and advocating for cycling infrastructure. The OCED is committed to making downtown Ottawa more sustainable, socially vibrant, and economically efficient; thus, encourages employees and the public to use bikes as a form of transportation. The OCED has shown their commitment by organizing events to increase cycling in downtown Ottawa by organizing programs such as Cycle In. The Cycle In report from the Ottawa Centre EcoDistrict was a review of the cycling infrastructure and involved citizens to review the benefits and concerns with the bike pathways in downtown Ottawa. The OCED partnered with the City of Ottawa to track bike routes and bike rack locations in order to develop a plan to resolve the issues of downtown commuters. The OCED is committed in their efforts to making downtown Ottawa a safe and efficient place for cycle users.
The OCED team is honored to be given this recognition for their efforts to promote cycling as a primary form of transportation within the Ottawa area.
