The Ottawa Centre EcoDistrict is part of the EcoDistricts movement that started in Portland, Oregon and has spread to cities across North America. From Seattle to Washington to Boston, EcoDistricts are popping up all over the US as a way to transform neighbourhoods and make them ecologically, economically, and socially healthier.
The idea behind an EcoDistrict is to have residents, property owners, businesses, and organizations collaborate to reduce their environmental footprint, create dynamic & vibrant social spaces, and attract businesses & organizations.
An EcoDistrict is a place where everyone has a voice – from residents to developers. It is about working together to make a community better for everyone.
Ottawa is home to Canada’s first official EcoDistrict. A group of volunteers came together in 2012 around the idea of making Ottawa’s core a place to be truly proud of – a culturally and socially vibrant community that is not only inviting for tourists, but is also attractive to residents and businesses. The Ottawa Centre EcoDistrict grew out of this vision.
We are also proud to be part of the Target Cities program. Launched as a Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) Commitment in June 2014, Target Cities is a fresh approach to building capacity, governance, and leadership in the area of neighbourhood development.
